Café Afterlife
This collaborative project fabricated by the CADRE Student Organization was presented at San Jose's Hammer Theatre cafe, located in downtown San Jose. This artwork was presented along with the other First Friday festivities in downtown. The installation was shown on Friday, Nov 1st, 2019 from 5pm - 11pm.
The overall theme was nostalgia and with it being Nov 1st, we were inspired by the holiday of Day of the Dead, Día de Muertos. Día de Muertos played a big inspiration into the themes and visuals that were at display for the installation.
During the project timeline, I was the President of this student organization and led a group of several undergraduate student artists to create this public immersive installation. During the month of October, I ran various various workshops and tutorials to teach the techniques and programs, such as MadMapper, to the students to fabricate the installation and develop content to project for this public show.
The project had a mix of practical effects, such as gaze screens and a smoke machine, mannequins, and other physical props inhabiting the space. Digital visuals and content were created through techniques of live-action filming, rotoscoping animation, 3D virtual environments, digital image and video editing, and physical electronics that which was projected around the space.
